Guettner Family

Quest

If you know the answers to these questions listed below please respond in the "Contact" tab on the left hand side of the WEB Site page.  We are looking for copies of the documented evidence.  If you have any questions, we would be happy to post them under QUEST.  Thanks.

Note: Birth and Death dates before 1900 are generally estimated unless something like a "Bible Record" is avalable. Most states started keeping Birth and Death Certificates after 1900.   Therefore, if you have a "Bible" please send us a copy under the "Contact" tab - copy the front of the Bible, the inside Title page with the date the Bible was published, Birth pages, Marriage pages, Death pages and any other pages that would be relative to the Guettner/Bauer Family lines.

Quest Questions:

1. What date, port, and ship did the Guettners come to America? Do you have a written record?

2. How did the Guettners get to Chattanooga? What route?
Answer: Typically, Ships carrying German immigrants from Hamburg Germany destined for Morgan County Tennessee were first directed to the port of New York and from New York by Steamer to Charleston, South Carolina. From Charleston the journey was made through north Georgia to Chattanooga by rail, stage and wagon. From Chattanooga the journey was completed by Steam Boat up the Tennessee River to Kingston.  By 1850, Steam Boats made three trips a day from Chattanooga to Kingston.  Transportation from Kingston to Poplar Springs was by horse back, wagon or you walked.

3. Did the Guettners own land in Chattanooga?

4. Where did the Bauers own land in Poplar Springs?
Answer: The Bauers lived next to Neergaard Island - see Neergaard Cemetery

5. Was Magdalena Bauer's first name really - "Dorathia"?

6. When did Charles Bauer die?

7. Did Greyton Bauer marry? To whom? and when did he die? Does anyone have information on him going out west to Arizona?
Answer: In a letter from Casper to Daughter Catherine Guettner he talks about hearing from Craighton and that "Dora" is getting along fine.  My guess from this then Dora is Craighton's wife. Where did they live?

8. Do you have any pictures or videos of past Guettner Reunions? Can we get a copy?

9. What is Lousia T Guettner's maiden name ?

10.  Where is Neergaard Island? is it Long Island of Long Island Wildlife Management Area?
Answer: The Bauers lived next to Neergaard Island - see Neergaard Cemetery located on the banks of the Tennessee River in Crestwood/Kingston TN.  Looks like Neergaard Island is the peninsula area and Long Island around Foremast Road, Crestwood/Kingston TN.  Germans call a peninsula - "half-island".

11. Who is the Wineter Family - Moses and Leah Wineter? Moses died at Kingston then is looks like Leah and the three boys followed the Bauers to Kansas City~1882.
